Encon Electronics hosts Viking Seminar

Encon Electronics held its third consecutive seminar June 12th at their training facility in Hayward, Calif. Encon collaborated with gate operator manufacturer Viking Access Systems offering a hands-on workshop to nearly fifty Encon dealers.

Viking chief engineer, Daniel Perez, conducted the all day seminar and participants truly benefited from his technical expertise. Encon's Vicki Jones noted, "The lecturing style of Mr. Perez coupled with his hand written diagrams and slide presentation made the seminar extremely informative and the material easy to grasp." Attendee, Ruben Castrejan of A&D Automatic Gate and Access agreed, "The thing I liked most about the seminar was that the creator of the product was the speaker. He took suggestions from the audience on how to improve their product line."

Perez opened the seminar with a simple question to all the attendees, "What features would you like to see in the ideal operator?" According to this large group of Encon customers, "The ideal operator is easy to install, makes our customers happy, comes with a great manual, has solar capability, never breaks down and has proven reliability." Perez referred to this "wish list" throughout the seminar.

He began with an overview of the original Viking operators and then provided a detailed breakdown of operator power supplies. He covered lighting strikes and the Viking EMI board, which is conveniently installed in every Viking unit. "We've tried to take advantage of the technology out there today and integrate these advancements into our operators," Perez said. "The Viking power supply system remains incredibly cool. The transformer produces less heat and is therefore more efficient."

Perez then demonstrated the durability and efficiency of Viking products by attempting to short the PC board of one of the operators. Two volunteers jumped at the opportunity to help Perez intentionally damage the board. After attempting a screwdriver to short the board to ground and pouring water on the board, the operator still had full functionality.

"I liked when Mr. Perez demonstrated the robustness of the board," said Mai Walters of The Bowan Company. "I've never seen a manufacturer pour water on its own operator before," noted another attendee. "This demonstration made an impression and it illustrates Viking's confidence in their product."

The next portion of the seminar was dedicated to troubleshooting and installation of Viking operators. Perez outlined what each LED indicator signifies, how to analyze the EMI board, battery backup systems and solar installation techniques. He described how to install solar panels using the Viking power box and provided tips on testing voltage.

Next, Perez covered Viking's helical-bevel gear system. According to Perez, "Most gear box systems have many problems. They are noisy, require film lubrication and heavy oil and are only 40% efficient. With the Viking helical-bevel system, noise and vibration are minimized, the load is distributed and it is 90% efficient."

The final segment of the workshop Perez discussed Viking's extensive operator line. "Viking offers a wide selection including residential, commercial and industrial swing or slide gate operators." He provided hands on installation guidelines and testing techniques that complimented the technical nature of this seminar.

Attendees appreciated Perez' ability to discuss the technical aspects of the operator while sharing relevant examples with the audience. "I was very impressed with the lecturer. The entire presentation surpassed by expectations," said attendee Chris Dormady of Phoenix Fence. "The speaker was very thorough and covered as much as he could on each and every Viking operator."

Encon concluded another successful seminar with an exciting raffle giveaway highlighted when Encon dealer Steve Roberts of Statcomm won a Viking L3 slide gate operator.

"Encon Electronics continues to lead the industry with our unrivaled training efforts. This technical based seminar strengthens dealer knowledge and helps increase revenue potential," Jeff Harris, Encon general manager, noted.

Additional Encon seminars are scheduled at their training facility in Hayward, Calif. For information on the remaining 2007 seminar schedule visit www.enconelectronics.com or call toll free 800-782-5598.
